Townhouse gains nautical style with Brazilian bossa in Florida

Located in Miami Shores, a charming residential neighborhood in Greater Miami, Florida, this townhouse of 400 sqm, spread across two floors, was transformed to reflect the lifestyle of a Brazilian couple from Florianópolis who sought lightness, comfort, and connection with nature. The project was developed by architect Mariana Maisonnave (from the CASACOR Santa Catarina lineup), who brought to the United States the relationship of trust previously built with the clients on projects carried out in Brazil. The resident works in the healthcare field in Miami, while her husband manages his businesses and investments. Passionate about outdoor life and being close to the water, they found in this condominium on the banks of a canal, with a private marina for residents, the ideal setting for a routine focused on well-being, security, and leisure. Accustomed to the coastal atmosphere and enthusiasts of sailing, they saw the location as a decisive differential for keeping one of their favorite activities: spending weekends aboard their own boat.

The architecture of the residence arose precisely from this bond with the landscape. With a contemporary language, a light palette, and timeless materials such as wood and travertine, the project enhances the privileged view of the canal and promotes a fluid integration between indoor and outdoor spaces. The architect's intention was to create spaces that dialogued with the surroundings without competing with them, allowing nature to take the leading role in the living experience.

Before the renovation, the house had features common to older Miami residences, with compartmentalized spaces, an isolated kitchen, and dark, classically inspired finishes. The intervention completely transformed this configuration by integrating the social spaces. Living room, dining room, kitchen, and gourmet area now dialogue with each other and, above all, with the outdoor landscape.

The finishes also reinforce the Brazilian identity of the project. The entire ground floor flooring was replaced with porcelain tile, and the large wall clad in rock face travertine became the main focal point of the social area. On the countertops of the gourmet area, Taj Mahal stone creates an elegant contrast with the cabinetry crafted in light wood veneer. On the upper floor, the original natural wood flooring was of excellent quality, but had a reddish tone that clashed with the new proposal. To preserve this noble material without compromising the visual identity of the project, the entire surface was sanded and received a toner that brought softer nuances aligned with the adopted palette.

In the loose furniture and rugs, the combination of cotton, chenille, wood, and straw reinforces the feeling of comfort. Pieces with fluid lines coexist with items sourced from fairs, craft shops, and international suppliers. Highlights include a straw bench imported from Thailand, tables produced by artisans, and decorative objects carefully selected to bring authenticity to the projects.

The residence was also designed to meet the needs of the family's two most special members: the dachshunds Piper and Milka influenced some project decisions. In the master suite, for example, the bed was specified with reduced height to facilitate the animals' movement and provide more autonomy and comfort in daily life.

The lighting design combines technical, comfort, and decorative lighting, creating different atmospheres throughout the day and enhancing both the architecture and the materials used. Discreet recessed fixtures ensure functionality, while LED strips tucked into cabinetry and countertops produce soft and welcoming effects. Adjustable spotlights and outdoor wall sconces complement the composition, highlighting specific elements of the architecture and decor.
