Judy Chicago's Feminist Activism Comes to Miami Art Basel 2018

In the 1960s, the narrative of landscape and land art had been dominated by men. Judy Chicago, who at this time was called Judy Gerowitz, wanted to insert a female perspective into the concept and created the "Atmospheres" series, softening and feminizing this environment. From then on, the artist raised the feminist flag and declared herself an activist with a speech that changed her name forever. “Judy Gerowitz here strips herself of all the names imposed on her through male social dominance and chooses her own name , Judy Chicago”, made for Artforum, in October 1970. At the time, there were few government regulations, so Chicago would gather her friends and head to the desert landscapes. They would all participate with flares and colored smoke, take nude photos, and bring food, as the days were often long. Judy performed her art with fireworks between 1968 and 1974, where the pieces became increasingly larger in scale. In 2012, the artist resumed her work with the Getty Performance Festival, creating new works. The photographs documenting all of Judy's pieces will be on display at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami in an exhibition entitled Judy Chicago: A Reckoning.
