The career of photographer, architect and professor
Cristiano Mascaro is the subject of two simultaneous exhibitions taking place in the capital of São Paulo. “
What the eyes can see ” is the title of the exhibition that began on March 29 at
Sesc Pinheiros . On April 3, it will be the turn of “
Alma ” to open at the Cidade Matarazzo complex.
At
Sesc Pinheiros, there are around 180 images by Mascaro, selected by critic and curator Rubens Fernandes Junior. Entitled “
What the Eyes Can See ” , the exhibition seeks to reveal a little of these 50 years of intense production, from the beginning of his career, working as a photojournalist, then as a teacher and creator of his own aesthetic focused on urban space – cities and their characters. Coming to his work as a storyteller, many of them inspired by literature, and as a memorialist of cities through the production of numerous books. In the Sesc galleries, distant images of Tokyo or Doha meet records of places, often prosaic ones like Carapicuíba and, mainly, São Paulo – an eminent object of observation for the photographer. At the Cidade Matarazzo complex, the “
Alma ” exhibition is part of the official program of Gallery Night, a gallery circuit organized by
SP-Arte . Curated by Marc Pottier, 20 photographs evoke the possible presences that permeate the walls of the old Matarazzo Hospital, which closed in 1993. There, since 2013, the photographer has been investigating the history of the various abandoned spaces of the deactivated institution, now taken over by major construction projects that will soon become the Cidade Matarazzo complex. The large-format B&W images reveal a little of what is invisible to visitors.
"To photograph is to create with the transfiguring power of the gaze", says the photographer. Cristiano Mascaro is a photographer, architect and professor. He graduated in architecture from FAU/USP and is one of the most important photographers of the capital of São Paulo and its architecture, which he has been documenting for over two decades. Among his most important works are records of the interior of the state of São Paulo and historical heritage sites throughout Brazil.
