Faig Ahmed, a young artist from Azerbaijan (a country in the Caucasus that borders Armenia) is the author of surprising artistic compositions using carpets. As a child, he says that he destroyed one of his great-grandmother's carpets with scissors while playing in the maze of patterns. It was the beginning of her journey exploring the shapes, textures and meanings of rugs.

Given the delicate political situation in Azerbaijan and most of the former republics of the Soviet Union, Ahmed's works have a political connotation: the combination of different patterns in a single rug is a strong statement of the possibility and beauty of coexistence.
