Despite the spectacular design, Paul Cocksedge did not win the competition. The UK pavilion will feature artificial intelligence in a futuristic experience. British artist Es Devlin OBE, who was inspired by one of scientist Stephen Hawking's last projects, designed the newly pavilion unveiled. The artist launched a campaign asking people around the world to consider how we might express ourselves as a planet if we encountered intelligent extraterrestrial life. The pavilion aims to be a platform for people to learn, have fun and collaborate with others while exploring new frontiers, echoing the theme of the exhibition. The dramatic design of the structure will feature illuminated words and phrases to catch the attention of passersby. Visitors can contribute with his own feelings for the sculpture, creating an ever-changing poem, gathered across dozens of canvases.
Paul Cocksedge has reached the final stage of the competition that selected the design for the United Kingdom Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai UK – chosen from over a hundred entries. The pavilion features the colours of all the flags of the nations that will be exhibiting at the event, expressing unity , partnership and possibility. The overlapping shadows reflect the Expo’s theme – Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. At the heart of the building, a sculptural piece envelops visitors in color and light, giving the sensation of an “impossible” structure. “We were drawn to the idea of seeking inspiration,” says Paul Cocksedge. “That concept informed the entire architecture of the pavilion. We designed a sculptural watercolour that plays with the natural environment to connect with people.”
