Messa Penna and Carol Piccin create sustainable suite for CASACOR SP

Messa Penna 's suite for CASACOR São Paulo 2019 can be precisely defined as sustainable: natural resources of recyclable origin, renewable materials, positive social impact and minimal extraction of raw materials are the foundations of the project, which combines sustainable principles with aesthetic and architectural beauty. The architect duo Olivia Messa and Luciana Penna worked together with Carol Piccin from MateriaLAB to not only develop design solutions that favor the environment, but also to ensure transparency in the communication of sustainable differences, which can inspire new generations towards a more sustainable way of life. The children's room was created with the intention of inspiring imagination, art, reading and manual work with the reuse of materials. The products used in the space, in addition to being mostly Brazilian, are of recycled origin or come from renewable sources. Thus, the coatings were produced from waste from another industrial process, with almost no new extraction of natural resources. The fabrics were produced with recycled PET bottle and cotton threads, in a process that eliminates the need for chemicals. To produce 500g of textile scraps, 8 PET bottles were used. The cylindrical sculpture that runs along the staircase was made from toilet paper rolls and colorful recycled craft paper. Pieces made from plastic bags have also become works of art. Furthermore, the floor covering also features recycled aggregate: glass, ceramic scraps, expanded clay and terrazzo shards account for 60% of the product's mass. “Beds, swings and rugs made from nautical rope macramé can be reused in the future,” says Olivia. Crafts, made by communities that benefit economically, contribute to the circular economy by increasing the life cycle of raw materials and the collection of post-consumer and post-industrial waste. Carol Piccin — who gave a lecture on June 4th at Arena CASACOR entitled Sustainability: Research, Technology and Design —, and her team use the circular economy as the basis of their operating model. Thus, their projects are focused on ensuring that products, components and materials are maintained at their highest level of usefulness and value at all times.
