A modern home originally designed by design duo
Quincy Jones and
Frederick Emmons for
Joseph Eichler in 1962 has been renovated by California firm
Ryan Leidner Architecture . With bright white paint and lush greenery, the
Twin Gable House , located in Sunnyvale, California, is one of more than 10,000 modernist subdivisions that Eichler developed after World War II.
The
open-plan home features two bright white pitched roofs that contrast with the red cedar siding added to the facade to replace the original beaded plywood siding. A
glass-enclosed garage is also visible on the facade. . Originally called
Plan OJ-1605 , the property has been remodeled several times since it was built. For this renovation, Ryan Leidner Architecture updated the
2,000-square-foot space with white interiors that feel like a home for a family of four.
Inside, large
sliding glass doors and windows open onto lush landscaping by
Stephens Design Studio , which breathed new life into the existing courtyard and pool during the renovation.
The courtyard is one of the many architectural elements the team preserved during the renovation, as is the beam structure that extends to the ceiling. The
organic path that the garden traces across the floor functions not only as a contemplative object, but also as a
route that connects all the rooms in the house .
In terms of decor, the studio removed several walls to
adjust the flow of the layout and create an open-plan living area. The plaster walls were smoothed and repainted white, along with the wooden beams and mouldings that cover the ceiling.
To harmonize with the white, square porcelain tiles cover the floor of the entire residence – including external areas, such as the patio.
The studio also removed old furniture, like the shag rugs and cabinets, to make way for a
clean, contemporary decor . In the kitchen, Carrara marble counters and
