COS unveils fashion collection based on Bauhaus design principles
Fashion brand COS has created a 13-piece collection of clothing and accessories that celebrate the Bauhaus movement and its affiliated artists and architects. The launch commemorates a century since the design school was founded in Weimar and exemplifies its lasting impact on creative trends to this day. today. Six menswear and six womenswear items, plus one accessory, have been selected from the COS archives to form the inaugural Archive Editions collection. Each was originally created according to Bauhaus principles, with the design team making small adjustments to modernize the fittings and cuts. The brand has always been inspired by the arts to innovate. In this case, that meant embracing the idea that form follows function - which, while widespread in design and architecture, often eludes fashion.
Through research and design, COS sought to distill these inspirations into modern and functional pieces, designed to last and transcend the seasons. The collection incorporates rectangular and circular shapes, reminiscent of designs often explored within the movement, and the color palette is essential. and monochromatic, reminiscent of the school building itself. Ergonomics were an important consideration in the design of menswear, as epitomized in the collarless wool coat with its minimalist construction and hidden functionality that can be seen through the discreet zips and pockets, a design function often associated with the Bauhaus and its artists. Meanwhile, for women's pieces, designers opted for sculptural folds and pleats, a technique that helps to give the body a flat shape. The collection is part of a series of projects and events celebrating the Bauhaus centenary this year, with two new museums opening for the occasion – one in Dessau and one in Weimar – alongside a series of high-profile exhibitions, including Beyond Bauhaus at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
