Designed by architects Carolina Escada and Patricia Landau, from the Escala Arquitetura firm (and part of the CASACOR Rio de Janeiro lineup), this linear 215 sqm apartment in Leblon, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, underwent a complete renovation to adapt to the new routine of a 46-year-old businessman and his two student children. The synergy between the professionals and the client, who had previously worked together on an earlier property with a similar floor plan, was fundamental to designing a precise space optimization strategy. The project faced the challenge of accommodating a robust program while maintaining fluidity and flexibility for the family's future.

The main transformation took place in the layout distribution. The original configuration was entirely reworked to create three complete suites, including the master suite with a closet and home office. To enable the expansion of the private wing, which previously had only one suite, the kitchen was completely relocated and integrated into the social area. The space originally occupied by the service area now houses the support bedroom and bathroom, a floor plan engineering that made it possible to optimize every square meter without compromising the functionality and circulation of the property.

The new social area now totals 78 sqm of integrated space, designed to provide a striking transition experience. Right at the entrance, the hall clad in ebonized European oak, with a lowered ceiling and soft scenic lighting, creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The hall opens into the living room, bathed in natural light and framed by the view of the treetops, which acts as a living frame for the gathering space.

The great connecting element of the social wing is the ebonized oak millwork panel, which begins in the hall and runs along the entire length of the living room wall. It incorporates ultra-thin metal shelves and a suspended concrete rack cast in place during construction. In the passage to the kitchen, the millwork gives way to sliding doors with large circular glass viewers, a versatile solution that isolates noise and odors when necessary, while maintaining visual communication. With the doors open, the synthetic stone countertop of the peninsula aligns perfectly with the peroba-do-campo wood buffet in the dining room, reinforcing the spatial continuity.

The decor follows a contemporary and understated language, structured around the reuse of the Brazilian design collection the client already owned. Iconic pieces bring memory and identity to the spaces, such as the Jangada armchair by Jean Gillon, the Shell armchair by Estudiobola, the Dinn chairs and the Bank table by Jader Almeida, the Longo bench by Zanini de Zanine and the Luciana chest of drawers by Sergio Rodrigues. Sentimental elements also stood out, such as the oratory by Dado Castello Branco placed in the hall. To complete the setting, the studio strategically introduced new items, such as the Gabriela stools by Daniela Ferro, the Dons table by Ronald Sasson and a foosball table for the family's leisure.

The materials palette was carefully designed to enhance the richness of the natural woods of the existing furniture. The architects adopted an ultra-light base and natural fiber rugs, highlighting the original peroba-do-campo parquet floor, which was fully restored. The visual balance of the apartment lies in the subtle contrast between this light base, the warmth of the wooden textures and the graphic strength of the ebonized cabinetry, concluding a year of project and construction with a sober, elegant and welcoming atmosphere.
