Tarsila of plump and exuberant forms, of fruits, of mandacarus, of processions, of the countryside, of the blue country... it is this facet of the artist that the exhibition entitled “
Tarsila Popular ” focuses on. The curatorship by Adriano Pedrosa and Fernando Oliva questions the vision that isolatedly associated the set of pictorial work with the European modernist tradition.
The proposal of the
MASP curatorial duo is to reveal the most popular character of the artist's work by emphasizing in the narratives portrayed in her paintings the social and political issues of the context of the time and which remain current to this day. In addition, there is an effort to bring this erudite painting closer to popular art without, however, leaving aside the parallel with the aesthetics of European modernism.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the
Abaporu painting, which marks the moment when modern Brazilian artists “digested” what they saw and learned in Europe and responded with an art that sought a closer and more intense contact with the life of deep Brazil. . The work, which belongs to the Malba collection in Buenos Aires, is considered the most valuable painting in the country.

The Moon ”, from 1028, recently purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, in New York this year, for more than 20 million dollars – after the success of the great retrospective “
Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil ” exhibited last year by the institution – is part of the exhibition and attracts everyone’s attention.
