The poetic universe full of organic and abstract forms of Joan Miró (1893-1983) arrives in São Paulo in an unprecedented exhibition. On display at the Brazilian Art Museum of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (MAB FAAP), the exhibition Miró: Master of Forms, an international show that brings together more than 100 original works by the Catalan artist.

With paintings, sculptures, engravings, tapestries, and photographs, the exhibition presents a broad overview of a trajectory that spanned more than six decades and helped transform the paths of modern art.

Organized by Instituto Totex, with the collaboration of the Joan Miró Foundation and institutional partnership with the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation and MAB FAAP, the show brings together works from important European institutions and collections.

Among them are pieces from the Miró Foundation of Barcelona, the Miró Mallorca Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Mallorca, and private collections. Dozens of works are presented for the first time in Brazil, including pieces that had never left Spain.

Born in Barcelona in 1893, Miró developed throughout his career a visual language of his own, marked by symbols, organic forms, intense colors, and elements that seem to move between dream and reality.

Although he engaged with important European avant-garde movements, such as surrealism, cubism, and fauvism, the artist never fully committed himself to a single school.

His production spanned different mediums, including painting, sculpture, engraving, ceramics, and tapestry, always accompanied by intense experimentation. It is precisely this creative freedom that the exhibition seeks to present to the Brazilian public, revealing the different phases and possibilities explored by Miró throughout his life.

Unprecedented works and major highlights

Among the highlights of Miró: Master of Forms are Mont-roig III (1974), Jeune fille s’évadant (1967), Centenary of the Mourlot Print Studio (1953), Album 19 (1961), and Personnages, oiseaux, étoile (1978), all shown for the first time in Brazil. The selection also includes works such as 2 + 5 = 7 (1965) and Woman and Dog in Front of the Moon (1935).

Another high point is the ten monumental tapestries produced in partnership with Josep Royo, some up to ten meters long. Among them is Le Lézard aux plumes d’or (1989–1991), also shown for the first time in the country. The set is further complemented by eight works belonging to the private collection of Miró's family.

Five sections reveal different phases of the artist

Curated by Spaniard Jordi J. Clavero, the exhibition's path was organized into five thematic sections, which present different aspects of Miró's production and help to understand how his language transformed over the decades.

Rather than following a rigid classification by artistic movements, the exhibition highlights the way the artist built a unique visual vocabulary, exploring the relationship between figuration and abstraction, imagination and reality, in addition to his constant search for new forms of expression. The tour is also accompanied by eight special videos, which contextualize the sections and delve deeper into aspects of the artist's life and work.

Photographs reveal the artist behind the works

In addition to the artworks, the exhibition presents a collection of 30 rare photographs taken by Joaquim Gomis, a close friend of Miró. The records show moments from the artist's daily life and different stages of his creative process, offering visitors a more intimate perspective on his routine.

The images help reveal a reserved and disciplined Miró, for whom everyday gestures and the observation of the world were also part of his artistic practice. Thus, the show is not limited to presenting his paintings, sculptures, and engravings, but creates a broader portrait of the artist and his particular way of seeing and transforming reality.
