Roberto Marinho House Institute opens in Rio de Janeiro
New cultural center opens its doors to the public with an exhibition featuring works by modernist artists

The Instituto Casa Roberto Marinho , a cultural center located in the Cosme Velho neighborhood (RJ) and the home of the journalist and owner of Organizações Globo for over 60 years, has been open to the public since April 28. The new venture will display the collection of art with more than 1,400 pieces belonging to the Marinho family, in addition to hosting temporary exhibitions and a schedule of courses and workshops.

The debut exhibition is entitled Modernos 10 - Destaques da Coleção and brings together 124 works by ten modernist artists, such as Candido Portinari, Lasar Segall, Tarsila do Amaral and Di Cavalcanti. In the garden designed by Burle Marx, the highlights are the sculptures by Bruno Giorgi, Raul Mourão, Carlos Vegara, among others. The temporary exhibition "10 Contemporaries", which brings together current productions, completes the Institute's opening calendar.

“In fact, the external structure will remain almost intact. Inside, the floor plan changes, as we need to create flat surfaces for the exhibitions. Below is the glamorous main hall, with the old Steinway grand piano. Above, the The configuration is that of an exhibition area. Furthermore, we will create a new pavilion for the technical reserve and next to it there will be a school block, with courses and activities open to the public. All of this surrounded by the garden of Atlantic forest species, with sculptures and points of contemplation, the first made by Burle Marx for a private home”, explained to CASA CLAUDIA the architect and anthropologist Lauro Cavalcanti, director of the Institute .

The renovation was designed by architect Glauco Campello - also responsible for the restoration of the Imperial Palace in Rio de Janeiro - and financed solely by the Marinho family, without using incentive laws or tax exemptions. The Instituto Casa Roberto Marinho is located at Rua Cosme Velho, 1105, in Rio de Janeiro and is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 12pm to 6pm. Admission costs R$10.
