Tribute to Florian Raiss, the artist of fantastic sculptures
The artist from Rio de Janeiro should be remembered as a landmark in the history of contemporary Brazilian art, with his characteristic and unique sculptures.

The desire to materialize drawings led Florian Raiss, an artist from Rio de Janeiro, to become known for his sculptures and fantastic figures. From mermaids to centaurs, the mystical and even erotic works translate the sculptor's thoughts and essential and unique characteristics.

Raiss was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1955. He graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze [Academy of Fine Arts of Florence], Italy, between 1973 and 1974. In the same year, he entered the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma [ Academy of Fine Arts of Rome], where he remained until 1975. After this period, he moved to Mexico, where he studied drawing at the Academia de San Carlos of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México - Unam [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. [quote author="Florian Raiss"]Drawing led me to sculpture, which arose as a necessity, as a desire to materialize figures that I had in mind.[/quote] During his career, Raiss held numerous solo exhibitions in São Paulo, as well as participating in group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad (Germany, Sweden, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United States), with highlights including the MAM exhibitions at OCA, Arte Brazilian from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo - MAM/SP, in 2006 and Moderns, Post-Moderns, 80/90, in 2007, at the Tomie Ohtake Institute, also in São Paulo. The artist's last solo exhibition took place in 2015 , at the Lume Gallery.

Raiss passed away yesterday, March 26, as a result of cardiac arrest. The artist had beenhospitalized for two weeks due to a kidney problem.
