5 Must-See Tips for Miami Art Week, by Cristina Bava

I turned my nose up at it, but there was no way around it. For exactly 10 years, Miami has been one of my favorite destinations. The city is a killer when it comes to art and design, attracting some of the world's top artists. From the sophisticated Art Basel fair, to South Beach with its retro charm, to the graffiti-filled Wynwood neighborhood, Miami has something for everyone. Below, see some of the things I like most about the city.

1. 1111 Lincoln Road

1111 Lincoln Road is an incredible concrete parking garage designed by the duo Herzog & de Meuron. The Swiss architects recreated the traditional garage building and turned it into a multi-purpose space that looks like a house of cards. In addition to cars, the place is home to shops, restaurants, bars, cafes and an apartment with a spectacular viewpoint that hosts everything from parties to weddings.

2. De la Cruz Collection

One of the city's highlights are the private art collections that open their doors during this week for unmissable events. The Rosa dela Cruz collection is one of them. Since December 2009, the collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz has had its space in the Design District. The three-story building, designed by John Marquette, serves as an extension of the couple's home.

3. Rubell Family Collection

Created by Donald and Mera Rubell in 1964, this collection is now one of the largest in the world. The ever-expanding collection features artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol. It also showcases artists working at the forefront of contemporary art.

4. The Miami Beach EDITION

This hotel marks a new chapter in the history of “lifestyle” hotels by uber entrepreneur Ian Schrager – hotelier and visionary responsible for creating the “boutique hotel” concept. The entire design of the hotel was inspired by the rich history of the 1950s in Miami, with all its glamour and accents of Latin culture, especially Cuban.

5. Untitled Art Fair

UNTITLED is one of the parallel events of Miami Art Week. And in its fourth edition, it continues with an innovative approach to art. This year promises a vast program of seminars and events.
