Studio Arthur Casas transforms traditional construction in New York

Any movie set in New York has an almost obligatory scene on a street with brownstone buildings. The small, narrow, vertical row houses are typical of the city that never sleeps. The name comes from the brown bricks that cover the facades. For Studio Arthur Casas, however, the residences were an opportunity to create creative solutions in restricted spaces. The project has six floors, each corresponding to a room. The architects explained the creative process to the website Arch Daily. The first floor houses the kitchen, office and outdoor garden. The black cabinets and counters are unusual for the Studio, which usually uses light palettes, but the dark tones are balanced by wood paneling and white joinery.

The three upper floors were dedicated to the privacy of the occupants' family, a couple with two young children. For them, the Studio created, in addition to the bedrooms, a playroom, gym, cinema room and an outdoor area with a fireplace. The decor is marked by contrasts between neutral finishes on the inside and dark coverings on the outside. The flooring is made of oak on the upper floors and limestone on the lower floors. The warm, earthy tones of the palette reference the colors of the Middle East, the homeland of the residents. The appreciation for Brazilian design is evident in the choice of furniture, with several pieces designed by Arthur Casas himself. A similar aesthetic was applied to Sys Haus , a space designed by Casas for CASACOR São Paulo 2018 . Finally, the project's highlight is the indoor pool installed in the basement. Bathed in natural light through a skylight, it takes on a dramatic and scenic appearance. The cladding is made of wooden slats, punctuated by moldings and recessed linear lights. .
