Pininfarina designs Istanbul airport tower, inspired by tulips

The project, created with AECOM and inspired by the tulip, has been a symbol of Istanbul for many centuries and an important cultural reference in Turkish history.

Istanbul's new airport is designed to become the world's largest in terms of annual passenger capacity. The airport was officially opened last month with an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year and, by the end of its life, 200 million. million. The air traffic control tower was designed by Pininfarina and AECOM, who won an international competition to complete the structure in 2016.

The air traffic control tower combines influences from the aerospace and automotive sectors with elements reminiscent of Turkish culture. The building has two distinct control areas, positioned at different altitudes. A 360º view of the air traffic controllers is provided by glass windows. designed to optimize radiation and acoustic comfort.

The interior layout of the structure is based on the daily cycle of personnel sleeping, eating, working, learning, playing and resting. Sleeping areas benefit from early morning sun and avoid exposure to intense sunlight, while each The unit contains a raised bed, a small seating area and washing facilities. Two lounge areas are located adjacent to the central atrium on the first floor, offering private dining areas for staff.

From an environmental point of view, the tower’s design takes into account Istanbul’s strong climate changes. For this reason, a precise solar analysis was carried out to reduce the structure’s energy consumption. The use of high-efficiency glass was also used to compensate for visual needs by exploiting natural light while maintaining efficient insulation. The tower is also capable of providing hot water through solar collectors and generating electricity on site through the use of photovoltaic panels. Finally, a water collection system rainwater was developed to reduce the building's water footprint.
