Winner of a design competition, promoted by the Japanese city of Kazuno, Kengo Kuma proposed a bus station that is much more than a starting point and farewells. The place, called Yunoeki Oyu, is a community center, developed to be an attraction and tourist facility.
After three years of construction, the station was built in 2018, alongside the road, to blend in with the natural landscape. One of the organic attractions of the project is the integration with the region's famous hot springs. The naturally heated water from the springs is accessible for passers-by to wet their feet while sitting on seats.
Inside the space, large rings stand out for their beauty and magnitude. Kengo used regional wood bending methods to create the laminated elements, which end up becoming ornamental sculptures. They also function as partitions and shelves, creating a hybrid and changeable space that can be organized according to need.
The place serves as an exchange between residents and visitors, also containing a food market, a stage for chats and lectures and an open park area.
