Edifício Aliança da Bahia brings together different ways of living at the same address at CASACOR Rio 2026

Long before concepts such as mixed-use and proximity cities entered the urban planning debate, some Brazilian buildings were already experimenting with the idea of concentrating different ways of living within a single structure. In São Paulo, examples such as the Copan, the Conjunto Nacional, the Esther Building and the Eiffel Building show how housing, work, commerce, services, culture and leisure can coexist at the same address. At CASACOR Rio 2026, the Aliança da Bahia Building presents a contemporary reading of this possibility by bringing together, across its different floors, a multiplicity of spaces and functions.

The occupation proposed by the showcase transforms the building into a kind of urban ecosystem on a reduced scale. Alongside apartments, houses, studios and lofts, projects emerge dedicated to work, creation, care, gastronomy, commerce, culture and social interaction. The result shows that a building can go beyond the function of housing only residences or offices and incorporate different activities of daily life.

At Aliança da Bahia, this diversity appears right at the reception itself, originally designed by Ruy Rezende and kept in its configuration, as a tribute to the architect responsible for the retrofit of the building. From there, different ways of inhabiting are distributed across the floors. The Casa Abraço DECA, signed by Studio Marino, the Casa Una, by Jacira Pinheiro, the Casa Entre Tempos | Brastemp, by Gisele Taranto Arquitetura, the Casa CO/EXISTIR, by STUDIOPLANO, the Casa Glade by Paula Neder, from PN+ | Paula Neder Arquitetura, and the Casa de Memórias, by Sebastian Gomez Arquitetura, present distinct interpretations of the contemporary home.

The residential repertoire expands with the studios and lofts. The Estúdio 7, by Amanda Miranda Arquitetura, the Estúdio Orbe, by Raphael Assaf Arquitetura, the Loft Pilotis, by Rafael Ramos Arquitetura, Entreatos, by Tiago Freire, Estúdio Entre Palmas, by Cristina Japiassú, Travessia | CasaShopping, by Studio Claudia Pimenta e Patricia Franco, Casa Bric, by Bric Arquitetura, and CASARÃO SENTA, TERESA!, by Paula Müller, explore different relationships among compactness, fluidity, memory, landscape and ways of living. Meanwhile, Desvio Moderno, by Tom Castro Arquitetura, and Um Lugar Para Todos, by Jairo de Sender and Corbellini Lopes Arquitetura, broaden the discussion about how residential spaces can respond to different needs and generations.

The suites also take on diverse configurations. Permanência, by LessaZanetta Arquitetura, Suíte Repouso do Tempo, by Carla Napolião and Allan Napolião, and Suíte Pausa, by Fernando Lanner Arquitetura, each work in their own way with concepts of permanence, rest and well-being. Toda Infância, by Sophia Abraham Interiores, brings this diversity into the children's universe, while Espaço de Cura, by Natália Lemos Arquitetura, brings together architecture, care and well-being in a loft dedicated to sensory experiences.

But it is precisely the presence of spaces with other functions that broadens the building's potential. The Sala do Empreendedor, signed by Erick Figueira de Mello – Estúdio Figueira, presents a work project that also functions as a showcase for Brazilian design. The Ateliê Devir, by Cité Arquitetura, adds the dimension of artistic and manual making, while Entre Casa e Cidade, by CAJOO.studio, investigates the relationships among architecture, design, memory and territory through a proposal that brings the home universe closer to production processes and joinery.

The dimension of togetherness also appears at different points along the route. Entre Olhar & Sentir, by Pedro Coimbra Arquitetura, brings together living room, game room, dining area and bar in a project designed for gatherings and activities. Meanwhile, Cozinha Infusão em Noz, by Juliana Acar and Flavia Dias Arquitetura, presents the kitchen as a space of togetherness and memory, while Prosa Carioca, by Fernanda Medeiros Arquitetura, explores the sophisticated informality of Carioca life in a living room with a wine cellar.

The diversity also extends to gastronomy. On the rooftop, Bar do 19, by Capuri Arquitetura, Astrodome Bistrô, by Diego Raposo + Arquitetos, Jardim do Bistrô, by Denise Shalom, and Bolhas – Bar de Champanhe, by Maurício Nóbrega Arquitetura, create different possibilities for gathering against the landscape of downtown. On the ground floor, Chez Patricia | Café and Cozinha Secreta do Chef, both signed by Ana Cano and Daniel Marques Mendes, bring together gastronomy, hospitality, and cultural programming. Avesso Speakeasy, by Altera Arquitetura e Interiores, adds to the program an experience that combines bar, music, art, and design.

Retail and services also become part of the building's daily life. The Livraria CASACOR, by Bianca Sieberer Arquitetura e Interiores, brings together books, art, and design; the Loja da CASA, by Anna Fadul Arquitetura, combines retail and togetherness; the Olhar Carioca, by Luan Freitas, translates the atmosphere of a Carioca home into the world of eyewear; and the Joalheria, by Paula Costa Arquitetura, brings references to the mineral origin of the pieces into the commercial space. The set demonstrates how consumer activities can be incorporated into a broader experience of permanence and circulation.

The cultural programming reinforces this logic. The Galeria Rio Memórias – Expo Entre Tempos, curated by Joaquim Marçal, establishes a reading of the urban and architectural transformations of downtown Rio. The Galeria do Artista Expo Interseções, an installation by Marcelo Monteiro curated by Vanda Klabin, investigates relationships between art, matter, and process. Meanwhile, the Galeria Modernista Expo FRAGMENTOS DO AVESSO, curated by Lissa Carmona and ETEL, brings together design, architecture, art, and memory through the trajectories of Percival Lafer and Paulo Werneck.

Other projects expand this presence of art and creation along the route. A Forma Informal – Sergio Rodrigues, by Bebo Arquitetos – Bel Lobo and Mari Travassos, brings together design, memory and production processes based on the work of Sergio Rodrigues. Fio Condutor | An immersive experience, by Grão Arquitetura, transforms the third-floor circulation into an installation that combines popular art, craftsmanship and materials, creating an experience that unfolds along the path itself.

The connection with the city also appears in the open areas. Clareira, by Pedro Rabelais Paisagismo, creates a breathing space on the ground floor amid the density of the city center, bringing together nature, landscape and social interaction. At the opposite end of the route, the Exit Lounge, by Roberta Nicolau and Rodrigo Cardoso, works as a space of transition and rest before returning to the city. Between arrival and departure, the building ceases to be merely a support for the projects and becomes part of the exhibition experience itself.

This combination of uses dialogues with one of the contemporary debates in urbanism, the concept of the 15-minute City, popularized by the French-Colombian urbanist Carlos Moreno. The proposal is based on the idea of bringing essential activities such as housing, work, commerce, education, health, culture and leisure closer to people, reducing the need for long commutes and encouraging a more diverse and connected city.

Although the concept applies to the urban scale, the occupation of the Aliança da Bahia Building allows a similar principle to be observed at an architectural scale: the more diverse the uses within a building, the greater the possibility that different needs and activities can coexist at a single address. CASACOR Rio highlights this potential by bringing together, within a single building, spaces to live, work, create, care, eat, shop, appreciate art, produce and meet people.
