This Wednesday, July 1st, World Architecture Day is celebrated in some countries and regions around the world. The date was established in 1996 to commemorate the founding of the International Union of Architects (UIA), which took place on July 1, 1949. In some places, however, the honor is celebrated on the first Monday in October.

Despite opening in 2008, Pei turned to ancient Islamic architecture in his design for the museum, most notably the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo. The museum features a high domed atrium within a central tower and an oculus that captures and reflects patterned light. A 45-meter-high window on the north side offers panoramic views of the bay, and geometric patterns complement the museum's extensive collection of Islamic art.

The steel pays homage to Holon’s sixteen-year urban regeneration programme, and the ribbons support and flow around a series of box-shaped gallery spaces within. The ‘steel bands’ design element can be seen both inside and outside the structure, and is a technique Arad has also used in other projects.

The 180-meter-diameter double dome features a “radial horizontal geometry and randomly perforated textile material, providing shade punctuated by sunbeams.” Constructed from 7,850 unique metallic stars, the structure creates a “shower of light” that moves under the sun. According to the architect, these are “reminiscent of the overlapping palm fronds of the oases of the United Arab Emirates.”
