The 16th edition of the
Venice Architecture Biennale began on May 26th. Curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, Irish architects who founded the firm
Grafton Architects from Dublin
, the event runs until November 25th, showcasing projects that stand out internationally. In 2018, the Biennale's theme is
Freespace and seeks to encourage architects to explore how generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity can contribute to the built environment. The event features a main exhibition in the
Central Pavilion of the Giardini and Arsenale featuring work by
71 participants . Two other special sections feature an additional 29 participants. Elsewhere, 65 national pavilions will showcase contributions from around the world, including seven newcomers: Antigua and Barbuda, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Lebanon, Mongolia, Pakistan and the Holy See.
Laura González Fierro, Sol Camacho, Gabriel Kozlowski and Marcelo Maia Rosa are the curators of the Brazilian presentation in the exhibition. The Brazilians interpreted the general theme to create the
Walls of Air . The theme
places the wall as an element of architecture, culture and Brazilian identity and sees in the act of its transposition an invitation to coexistence and cultural multiplicity.
