Reverse logistics is a system that organizes the return of products and packaging after consumption so they can receive proper disposal. The practice is part of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and seeks to reduce the volume of materials discarded improperly, encouraging reuse, recycling and other forms of use, including in the field of architecture.
In practice, it establishes a return path for items that would normally go directly to the trash. Depending on the material, this process may involve manufacturers, importers, distributors, merchants, consumers and specialized companies – creating a shared responsibility for the destination of waste!
Reverse logistics can be understood as the flow opposite to that of the consumption chain. Instead of the product leaving the manufacturer, reaching commerce and then the consumer, certain materials make the return journey after use to be reused, recycled or sent to environmentally appropriate final disposal.

In Brazil, the PNRS establishes shared responsibility for the life cycle of products and determines reverse logistics systems for certain wastes, such as batteries, tires, light bulbs, pesticide packaging and electronic products. The form of return may vary according to the product and the system adopted by each sector.
One of the main benefits is the possibility of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills or discarded irregularly. When materials return to the production chain, part of them can be recycled or reused as raw material, reducing the need to use new natural resources.
The practice can also contribute to a more circular economy, in which products and materials remain in use for as long as possible. In addition to the environmental gains, reverse logistics encourages companies to rethink production processes, packaging and consumption models, bringing environmental responsibility closer to the different stages of the chain.
In architecture, reverse logistics can be incorporated from the specification of materials to the moment of a renovation or replacement. An example is floors, metals, sanitary ware, furniture, mattresses, electronics and light bulbs, which may have their own collection or disposal systems after use, depending on the manufacturer and product category.

In residential or corporate projects, it is also possible to consider the destination of leftover materials, packaging and components removed during renovations. Before discarding these items, it is worth checking whether the manufacturer has collection programs, whether they can be sent for recycling or whether there is a possibility of reuse. In this way, the choice of materials no longer considers only aesthetics, performance and cost, but also includes the destination after use.
Operation depends on the type of product and the reverse logistics system established for it. In some cases, the consumer can take the used item to a collection point made available by manufacturers, merchants or organizations responsible for the operation. From there, the material is transported for sorting, reuse, recycling or another form of appropriate disposal.
Therefore, before discarding a product, it is worth checking the instructions from the manufacturer or the establishment where it was purchased. Packaging and items that have specific return systems should not be treated in the same way as ordinary waste, since they may require their own collection and treatment processes.
