A
recipe book , which aims to
redefine the way people view household waste , shows how it is possible to give new form to disposable items in a super beautiful way and with an attractive design. Leading the project is the
Invisible Waste Movement , a collective that emerged during the pandemic through an online conversation between professors from
IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) . Together, they created the
Cook Book - Recipes to transform what you have in your trash can . According to IED professor, designer and environmental activist Christian Ullmann, the book's objective is to draw people's attention to the volume of trash discarded daily. "Each participant in the [Invisible Waste] movement developed a project, 'a recipe', and the book presents the step-by-step process for transforming - redefining - waste into a product of greater value", says Ullmann.
The project came at a good time.
Plastic consumption exploded last year due to the rise in delivery and online shopping . At the same time,
Brazil recycles only 2% of discarded plastic , according to a study by the German organization Heinrich Foundation. Böll. This material ends up being harmful to the environment, as it emits greenhouse gases and contributes to global warming. The good news, according to Ullmann, is that people are also becoming more interested in
sustainable design .
The book, therefore, has different "recipes" on how to reuse what would otherwise be discarded in a very sophisticated way that can be reinterpreted in
interior design . "In our imagination, trash is repulsive, but have you ever stopped to think about the wealth that lies within it? There are a lot of natural resources, time and energy spent producing everything we discard. As designers, we understand that everyday waste is a design error", comments Ullmann. The
Invisible Waste Movement is made up of a heterogeneous community of more than 600 people from different areas of knowledge: designers, artists, entrepreneurs, teachers, students, innovators, makers and people in general who are curious and concerned about
identifying and developing new alternatives for the discarded materials.
