Forest Tower offers new views of nature from 45 meters above the ground

This is the proposal of the Forest Tower , a sensory architectural structure that has just been nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van der Rohe Award , in 2022. Located in the Gisselfeld Kloster forest, the Forest Tower offers a unique experience with nature , where you can appreciate it from a completely new perspective. The magnificent view above the treetops is unforgettable for those who decide to climb the 45 meters height of the tower. To get the full experience, however, visitors must start their journey much earlier, at the old water mill, 3.2 kilometers away . The distance is bridged by a raised path that winds through the forest , around the trees and over the streams, until it reaches the tower that takes shape among the vegetation.

Once you reach the tower, the walk continues through 12 circles towards the top . For each level you climb, you will discover that your perception of nature changes along with the architecture , thanks to the hourglass shape of the building. This architectural form is closely linked to the Forest Tower experiment , which was designed in a type of cylinder where the bottom and top are widened, while the middle is interlaced in a shape called a hyperboloid. This narrowing in the middle of the building is important because it is It allows you to get very close to three enormous beech trees grown in the middle of the structure . Finally, upon reaching the top of the structure, visitors can enjoy views of the forest and fields from the platform – elevated 140 meters above sea level . The Forest Tower is made of maintenance-free corten steel and oak sourced from the nearby Bregentved estate and Gisselfeld monastery. All wood used is PEFC certified .
