Documenta Pantanal is a project to document and promote one of the most beautiful regions in Brazil. Valuing the culture, diversity and nature of the Pantanal in favor of preservation is the proposal of the initiative that promotes and develops various actions such as exhibitions, books, videos, interviews and documentaries to celebrate the beauty and biodiversity of this Brazilian ecosystem, in addition to drawing society's attention to the urgency of knowing and preserving this heritage. “As a floodplain, the Pantanal depends fundamentally on the quality of the waters that run from the neighboring plateaus and on the flood and ebb flows that make it a natural sanctuary and allow its sustainable exploitation by extensive livestock farming and tourism. But both the water quality and the flow of floods and ebbs are already significantly altered by human activity and are under real threat,” warns João Farkas, in an interview for the website O Eco. Photographer João Farkas is one of the project’s creators.
Through targeted coordinated actions, in a strategy of activating and mobilizing society, Documenta Pantanal seeks to talk to a broad audience, and also bring together researchers, academics, producers linked to agribusiness, groups with interests in conservation, tourism, journalists and educators. “With these actions we want the Pantanal to be on the agenda of Brazilian public opinion and of organizations and institutions linked to sustainability issues,” say the project’s creators on the
Documenta Pantanal website . In addition to João Farkas, other important names are part of the project, such as Araquém Alcântara and Luciano Candisani - authors of a vast collection produced in this region, which is the largest flooded area on the planet in continuous extension. According to the organizer of the initiative, cultural producer Mônica Guimarães, for the magazine Arte Brasileiros, the participation of these three professionals helps to illustrate how photography is important in creating a thought that encourages the preservation of the Pantanal: “The sensitive look of each of them for the varied facets of the Pantanal region exposes, in addition to the exuberant nature of this ecosystem, its fragility and draws attention to the need for its urgent conservation”.
