It is common to resort to a socket adapter when an appliance does not fit the electrical installation of the house. After all, many properties still have old sockets or different standards, while several more powerful appliances use 20 amps (20A) plugs. However, one of the best-selling adapters on the market — the one that converts 10A to 20A sockets — can become a problem when used incorrectly.

Although these accessories are permitted and have specific applications, using them without understanding the capacity of the electrical installation can cause overheating and even fires. Therefore, before resorting to the quickest solution, it is worth understanding how Brazilian socket standards work and what precautions should be taken.
Since the adoption of the Brazilian socket standard (NBR 14136), two main types of residential sockets have existed: 10 amps (10A) and 20 amps (20A). The difference is not only in the size of the pins, but mainly in the electrical current that each one supports.

The 10A sockets are intended for lower power equipment, such as cell phone chargers, televisions, computers and light fixtures. The 20A sockets, on the other hand, are designed for appliances that require higher electrical current, such as microwaves, more powerful hair dryers, air fryers, heaters, electric ovens and portable air conditioners. This differentiation exists precisely to avoid overloads in the electrical installation.
The 20A plug does not mean that the appliance is 220V. It only indicates that it was designed for a higher electrical current. Before plugging in any equipment, it is essential to check both the voltage (127V or 220V) and the current required by the appliance and the capacity of the electrical installation.
The biggest problem occurs when an adapter allows connecting equipment with a 20A plug to a 10A socket. In this case, the adapter eliminates a safety barrier created precisely to prevent this connection. If the appliance actually requires a current higher than that supported by the socket or the electrical circuit, there may be excessive heating of the contacts, melting of the adapter, damage to the socket and, in more serious situations, the start of a fire.

It is worth noting that not every appliance with a 20A plug necessarily consumes 20 amps continuously. Some manufacturers use this standard for safety reasons or design margin. Even so, the adapter should not be used indiscriminately, since the socket, wiring and circuit breaker need to be compatible with the electrical load that will be used.
If an appliance requires a 20A socket, the safest alternative is to request the installation of an appropriate electrical point, carried out by a qualified electrician. In addition to changing the socket, it may be necessary to check whether the gauge of the cables and the circuit breaker support the current required by the equipment.
