Imagine the scene:
three simple bricks stacked together to create an
arch that prevents police cars from passing through during a protest. This was the reality experienced by
Hong Kong police officers , who won the
2020 Design of the Year award.
The simplicity combined with a product design solution was what caught everyone’s attention. The
bricks were placed on several streets in Hong Kong in an arc position. When police cars passed by, they knocked down the top brick, while the other two blocked the vehicle’s tires. This makes it difficult for police officers to reach protest sites.
It is not known exactly whose initial idea it was to position the bricks in this way, but the concept quickly became popular throughout the city.
The "brick arch" received the 2020 Design of the Year award in the
"People's Choice" category, precisely for its simplicity and practicality in solving what, for the protesters, was a problem.
