Campana Brothers exhibit for the first time in Fortaleza
Ceará hosts an exhibition with the most emblematic pieces by the Campana Brothers

Fernando and Humberto Campana have traveled the world to mount exhibitions, create interventions and receive tributes. But the Campana Brothers had not yet exhibited in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, where they arrived for the first time last week. On the 16th, the Multiarte gallery opened an exhibition with the artists, with an exquisite selection of 33 pieces and a bold and fun setup. In addition to their notable design creations, the public will have the opportunity to learn about the Campanas' artistic processes in drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs.

According to Max Perlingeiro, director of Multiarte and curator of the exhibition, “choosing the works to compose the exhibition was the great challenge – many more square meters would be needed to house the first selection. In the end, we opted for a “chamber concert”, but not so silent, because all available spaces in the Gallery will be included: from the parking lot to the garden.

But perhaps one of the most impressive works in this exhibition is permanent. Fernando and Humberto created a façade-object-design for Galeria Multiarte with the combination of 1,304 “Hand” cobogós. Impressed by the environmental disaster in the city of Mariana, MG, and in support of the collective initiative called Brado Mariana, they decided to create a cobogó brick, whose internal design represents the shape of a hand, as a symbolic manifesto to the tragedies caused in the state. The Hand cobogó is the result of an alchemy of natural materials, in which three different types of clay are used, generating greater resistance to the piece. The intention was to integrate the Mariana mud into the mass, but this was not possible because it would interfere with the quality of the product, making it brittle. Its production was possible thanks to a partnership between Instituto Campana and Divina Terra, Turmalina, MG.

The brothers’ work embodies the idea of transformation, reinvention and integration of craftsmanship into mass production; making everyday materials, poor or common, precious, which carry not only creativity in their design, but also very Brazilian characteristics – colors, mixtures, creative chaos and the triumph of simple solutions. “The modernity of our work also lies in showing that with the waste of the past we can build not only the contemporary, but also the future.”
