CASACOR SC: Santos Dumont staircase gives access to loft office

An option that used to be cheap and used by artists in the 60s is now increasingly popular and has become the first choice for many people: the loft, which features double-height ceilings, integrated spaces, exposed columns and an industrial style, is also present at Casa Cor Santa Catarina 2015. Architects Marila Filártiga and Beto Gebara designed “Meu Loft”, which was inspired by New York homes from the 1960s and 1970s and was designed for a man in his 40s, an executive at a multinational company who travels the world. Considering the resident's lifestyle, there is a great concern for health: the organic vegetable garden inserted in the Plantário, an appliance that takes care of the ventilation, lighting and irrigation of up to nine pots with plants of the user's choice, provides natural and fresh seasonings. Attention to sustainability is in the choice of skirting boards, made with 97% recycled materials - in addition to being ecological, the product does not absorb moisture.

“When we chose this format, we not only paid homage to this illustrious Brazilian, but we also found a sculptural solution for a staircase that takes up little space and offers comfort,” comments Beto Gebara. The staircase has this name because it was created by Santos Dumont himself, in his house in Petrópolis, which has now become a museum in the city. The story of its creation is quite interesting. It is said that it was built this way to correct a slope error, which made it more comfortable, since each step has a tab for the foot and a recess for climbing the next step. It is also said that it is superstitious, because it makes the resident start climbing it with the right foot, which brings good luck. This type of staircase is widely used in places where there is little foot traffic or space is very limited. Since the primary objective of this model is to save space, the staircase is generally designed narrow, with a width never exceeding 75 centimeters. Today, in addition to being used to save space, they also save materials. At Casa Cor São Paulo 2015, in the Living and Dining Room area, designed by architect Osvaldo Tenório, there is a staircase in this style that also gives access to a mezzanine, which functions as a resting space, with a wine cellar and an armchair for reading.
