Set against one of Rio de Janeiro's most iconic backdrops, the Aterro do Flamengo, architect Mariana Monnerat – from the CASACOR Rio de Janeiro lineup – signs the renovation of this 200 sqm apartment. The property underwent a complete layout revision to become a welcoming, fluid home deeply connected to the Rio landscape. Designed for a couple of geologists and their 4-year-old son, the project stemmed from the desire to create a home with spaciousness, practicality, and a strong presence of natural elements.

From the beginning of the creative process, the search for integration and breathing space dictated the project's guidelines. The idea was to build a continuous project where architecture, family routine, and the natural surroundings could converse without barriers. The renovation promoted a deep spatial reorganization: the demolition of the wall separating the kitchen from the social areas opened up space for a large 100 sqm living room, where lounge, dining, and TV room connect harmoniously. Thus, the kitchen went from being an isolated room to becoming an active part of the home's dynamics, perfectly integrated with the social life and the panoramic view of the park.

The floor plan reconfiguration also optimized the apartment's private area. A former bedroom was incorporated into the social space to house the TV room, while the child's bedroom gained square footage by repurposing the former circulation areas.

In the master suite, part of another bedroom was used to create more storage space, ensuring practicality without compromising comfort. In the wet areas, the intervention rebuilt bathrooms practically from scratch and inserted a powder room near the main entrance, strategically maintaining the original plumbing points to optimize the flow and complexity of the work.

During the demolition phase, the structural surprises typical of older renovations were embraced as design opportunities. The discovery of two pillars of different dimensions in the social area led to the decision not to hide them, but to turn them into protagonists: they were converted into exposed concrete cylinders molded in loco. Likewise, the exposed beams in the kitchen area required a plaster recess that ended up generating a subtle and charming ceiling level difference in relation to the rooms, revealing how the limitations of the work can culminate in striking architectural gestures.

Among the standout solutions, the property's former small sitting room was reinterpreted as an indoor balcony. With a raised floor and a custom-made concrete bench, the projects acts as an elegant transition space, designed for pausing and contemplating the landscape. The selection of materials reinforces this authentic and mineral atmosphere: the Emerald Green quartzite, personally chosen by the residents, runs across different surfaces and works as the visual thread throughout the entire apartment.

In the composition of the interiors, contemporary furniture and custom-made design dialogue with the sophistication of Brazilian signature design. Iconic pieces by Sérgio Rodrigues and carefully selected artworks complete the decor without excess, creating a balanced and warm atmosphere.
