Long live: Red and Blue turns 100

The famous Red and Blue chair, created by Dutch artist Gerrit Rietveld (1888 – 1964), turns 100 in 2017. What few people know is that the piece, known mainly for its bright colors, was initially painted black, gray and white. The furniture only received its primary hues (yellow, red and blue) a year later, to resemble Piet Mondrian 's paintings, when Rietveld began to have contact with the artist's work.

The chair is also part of the Dutch "De Stijl" movement (started in 1917), which advocated geometric abstractionism and its original version can be seen at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, United States. Since 1973, the Red and Blue and other famous pieces by the designer, such as the Zig Zag chair, have been produced by the Italian brand Cassina.
