The exhibition is part of the
Black Encyclopedia project, organized by researchers
Flávio Gomes and
Lilia Schwarcz and artist
Jaime Lauriano . The first stage was the edition of the book launched by Companhia das Letras, in March 2021, with 300 entries on black personalities who stood out throughout almost four hundred years of Brazilian history.
To illustrate the text, portraits were commissioned from
35 contemporary black artists , such as Antonio Obá, Arjan Martins, Ayrson Heráclito, Castiel Vitorino, Dalton Paula, Daniel Lima, Desali, Igi Ayedun, Juliana dos Santos, Moisés Patricio, Mônica Ventura, Nadia Taquary, Panmela Castro, Paulo Nazareth, Rebeca Carapiá, Renata Felinto, Rodrigo Bueno, Sonia Gomes and Tiago Sant'Ana, among many other names. If the organization in the book followed alphabetical order,
the exhibition was divided into 6 sections entitled Rebels; Atlantic Characters; Black Protagonists; Arts and Crafts; Freedom Projects; and Religions and Ancestralities.
The exhibition also connects with the new presentation of the museum's collection, which focuses on the main contemporary questions and aims to echo
more inclusive and diverse narratives . And following this proposal
, all the portraits in the exhibition will be part of the permanent collection of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo. Paul .
