Abraham Palatnik, known for his works that combine art and technology, go beyond the limits of creativity and simple painting and are made in movement, has a retrospective exhibition, in celebration of his 70 years in Rio de Janeiro, at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center .
Abraham Palatnik – The Reinvention of Painting is an exhibition that
brings together 85 works by the artist and was opened to the public on February 1st. Born in Natal in 1928, the son of Russian parents, Palatnik lives in Rio and has always sought to achieve an experience that involved in a new awareness of the body. The exhibition, curated by
Felipe Scovino and Pieter Tjabbes, presents
paintings, cinechromatic devices, kinetic objects, playful objects, furniture and project drawings, coming from private and institutional collections in the country and, mainly, from the artist's own collection. In general, Palatnik,
in 1948, joined the first group of abstract artists
in Rio, where he met
Emydgio de Barros and Raphael Domingues, when visiting the Museum of Images of the Unconscious, created in the asylum by the psychiatrist Nise da Silveira. From these visits When he arrived at the hospital, he abandoned paints and brushes and never returned to the figurative paintings he had been painting until then. The following year, he began his research in the field of light and movement, which led to his recognition as one of the pioneers of kinetic art , after receiving a special mention from the international jury. In 1964, the artist created “kinetic objects”, constructed from rods. or metal wires that have wooden discs of various colors at the ends and are moved by a motor.
