Concrete walls frame the view of Bali at the Tiing hotel

Away from the busy tourist spots, Tiing is a 14-room hotel located on the north coast of Bali.

Designed by Perth-based Nic Brunsdon in collaboration with local studio Manguning , Tiing is a “reward for the intrepid.” The studios said the project needed to set itself apart to draw visitors away from Bali’s traditional tourist hotspots; so the project He was committed to transforming Tiing into a resort that is inserted in its local and cultural context .

The project deliberately relies on traditional building materials and techniques while providing a robust conceptual framework. Knowing that concrete is Bali’s most widely used construction method and that bamboo is abundant, a series of concrete walls in bamboo forms were erected on site to create intermediate and internal conditions, framing the mountains and the sea.

The materiality of this project aims to work within the local context, construction techniques, resources and climate; a rugged regionalism.

At each end, the walls reference the Balinese gateways prevalent throughout the island. These gateways are highly decorated totems, carved with stones to encourage the spirit to move forward.

Architecturally, these walls function as funnels, offering mountain and sea views from every room. For the office, this condition is more than aesthetic, and functions as part of a traveling, grounding and localizing experience.

The pool, hidden in the entrance sequence, acts as an energizing arrival moment in stark contrast to the lush jungle . In addition, attention was paid to the height of the terrain and the way the water bodies of the pool and the ocean form a layer against the horizon.

Hidden in the center of the floor plan is the bathroom. Here, the finish is smooth and unadorned. Each room has a well of light, connecting the occupant to the sky. Protected, hidden and central, this space becomes a welcome surprise , a place of refuge. This is a space to reconnect with yourself and nature. Source: ArchDaily
