Science museum in Miami gets new headquarters

Built in 1949 in the Biscayne Boulevard area, the now Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science was initially named The Junior Museum of Miami. At the time , the museum experienced rapid growth and its headquarters had to be moved, to North Bayshore Drive, and was renamed the Museum of Science and Natural History . In 2015, the space was closed to gain a new look and address. Now, it will reopen in Museum Park, in downtown Miami, on May 8. Designed by London-based firm Grimshaw Architects , the new building features inviting openings in its structures, allowing natural light to enter and drawing the attention of those who view it from both inside and out. The open-air atrium cuts through the four interconnected buildings. and represents a breather for visitors, while also having the function of making them organize the information they absorbed while walking around there. With more than 23 thousand m², the space is divided into four buildings (Aquarium, Planetarium, and the North and West wings) and has a dynamic, sustainable, complex construction connected to the community and ecosystems in its surroundings.

The Museum is seeking Green Building certification and has taken several sustainable measures to achieve this, such as: construction of a green and open space with an adjacent park and square; areas for collecting and treating rainwater; low-flow irrigation systems; efficient LED lighting. , lighting controls and daytime dimming systems; natural ventilation and lighting in external galleries; recycling of construction waste, among other important actions.
