Throughout his career, the architect has built a rich body of work recognized for its contemporary language associated with the principles of Brazilian modernism. His work also goes beyond the development of projects: Kogan is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a professor at the Politecnico di Milano, and sits on the boards of MASP and MUBE – Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and Ecology.

From cinema to architecture

Graduated in 1976 from the School of Architecture and Urbanism at Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Márcio Kogan also had a remarkable experience in cinema before dedicating himself entirely to architecture. In 1988, he directed the feature film Fogo e Paixão, and this relationship with cinematographic language remains present in the way he thinks about spaces, especially in the succession of scenes, the framing of views, and the work with natural light.

At the helm of Studio MK27, he was recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in Brazil by Época magazine, was part of the “Wallpaper's 150 Famous for 15 Years” list, and ranked 39th on the Dezeen Hot List in 2017. Kogan also leads a team made up, for the most part, of architects who have worked with him for more than a decade.

Since 2001, Studio MK27 has adopted a cooperative creation and work system, bringing together different professionals and areas of expertise. The team is coordinated by four directors: Diana Radomysler, responsible for interior projects; Renata Furlanetto and Suzana Glogowski, who lead the architecture team and sign a large part of the projects; and Mariana Simas, as executive director. The structure allows projects to be developed collectively, combining different areas of knowledge while maintaining a common architectural identity.

Instead of seeking excessively complex forms, the architecture focuses on proportions and the quality of spaces, exploring balconies, courtyards, and the presence of the landscape as an essential part of the experience. This pursuit of simplicity, however, does not mean the absence of details: finishes, furniture, lighting, and interior solutions are designed in an integrated manner with the architecture.
