Lundén Architecture Company signs Nordic Pavilion at Venice Biennale

The Nordic Pavilion was created in 1962 by Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn as a way of celebrating natural elements. For decades, this space at the Venice Biennale was the exhibition venue for renowned architecture professionals, the so-called “starchitects”.

This has changed in recent years: the design that will occupy the pavilion was selected by curators from three museums, Juulia Kauste of the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the current team leader; Nina Berre of the Norwegian National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design; and Kieran Long from ArkDes, the Swedish National Center for Architecture and Design. Instead of individual projects, they looked for offices that prioritized social, environmental, economic and political engagement. The chosen one was Lundén Architecture Company.

Lundén Architecture Company was founded in 2008, and has since been working to develop a more self-aware architecture. According to the firm's website, each building is conceived around four questions: What are buildings and how are they built? What is the role and relationship between building and city, society and nature? How do people behave in their surroundings? How do digitalization and global interaction influence building typologies?
