Fran Silvestre Arquitetos stacks perpendicular volumes in the Sand House

Fran Silvestre Arquitetos continues its minimalist design language in monochromatic white with its recently realized Sand House . The contemporary residence is situated next to the Mediterranean, in a place where an imposing dune protects the coast from storms.

The relationship between the house and its site defines the organization of the two perpendicular volumes. To maintain the sea views, the team inverted what would be traditionally thought — so while the daytime area of the shared spaces occupies the upper level, from where it is possible to see the dunes, the private spaces occupy the more intimate lower volume.

The cantilever of the upper volume ends with an open-air cutout. This subtraction brightens the main room while maintaining privacy and at the same time casting much-needed shade on the lower level.

The intersection point between the two volumes is emphasized, housing the staircase and marking the entrance to the house. The long glass paths serve to visualize the occupants as they move through the house, a strategy that serves to highlight the perpendicular organization of the stack.
