The home can be much more than a place of passage. For neuroarchitecture, some projects have the potential to promote physical and mental rest, helping people to recover attention, reduce stress and slow down after an intense routine. It is in this context that so-called restorative spaces emerge.

The concept brings together principles of architecture, environmental psychology and neurosciences to understand how certain characteristics of projects influence behavior and emotions. More than following an aesthetic trend, it is about creating spaces that invite permanence, contemplation and balance.
Restorative spaces are projects planned to favor mental and emotional recovery after periods of effort, excessive stimuli or stress. The term originates from studies in environmental psychology, especially the Attention Restoration Theory, developed by researchers Rachel and Stephen Kaplan in the 1980s.

According to this theory, certain projects help the brain rest from so-called "directed attention", used in tasks that require constant concentration — allowing the recovery of focus capacity and reducing the feeling of mental fatigue!
Although there is no single formula, some features frequently appear in projects focused on well-being.
The presence of plants, gardens, internal courtyards or views of green areas is among the main elements associated with restorative spaces. Contact with nature contributes to reducing stress and creating a sense of welcome.
Projects well lit during the day help to regulate the biological rhythm and make spaces more pleasant for different activities. Whenever possible, large windows, skylights and openings favor this connection with the outside.
Reducing excessive noise is also part of the proposal. Coverings, fabrics, panels and construction solutions capable of controlling sound reverberation help create calmer projects that are conducive to rest.
Wood, natural fibers, fabrics, stones and finishes with a tactile appearance usually convey a greater sense of comfort than excessively cold or reflective surfaces. The variety of textures also makes the projects more interesting without generating visual overload.

In practice, this can mean transforming an underused corner into a reading space, reorganizing a project to improve circulation, or positioning an armchair in a spot that invites contemplation.
