In the outdoor area of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, a pop-up cinema was created by the Armenian architecture studio
SNKH . Called
Garage Screen , the temporary cinema will host a program of Russian and international films. Its structure was entirely designed way to highlight and guarantee its temporary nature.
Inside, the auditorium was covered with red walls and a ceiling structure was left visible. The chairs are individual – a condition that was necessary due to the pandemic. With a capacity for 225 people, the number of visitors to the auditorium was reduced due to half due to social distancing rules. "Luckily, our design has very useful advantages in these circumstances: the pavilion has four entrances, which allow for the flow of people to be organized, and thanks to the structural specifications, it has natural ventilation."
The studio had in mind that the temporary structure should not compete visually with the Museum of Contemporary Art, but at the same time it should have a bold design. To achieve this, many references were used in the construction of the project, as Snkhchyan says. "From Bedouin tents as an example of traditional nomadic architecture, to the work of the Russian Constructivists, the early works of Renzo Piano and many others."
