The Best Architectural Installations from Coachella 2016

Coachella , California's annual music festival, took place last weekend and, in addition to the musical performances, brought several innovations and ideas in architectural installations that are presented throughout the event area. In this edition, four projects enhanced the beauty of the festival and you can check them out below. Alex Arrechea’s Katrinas Chairs are structures that encourage a dialogue about the purpose and possibilities of space and design. The visual artist constructed four giant yellow chairs from steel with plywood-covered beams. The installation was 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide, and created an environment that offered both shelter from the sun and shade.

The Tower of Twelve Stories by Jimenez Lai. The designer has combined architecture and art in this 16m-high installation, where its modules are assembled not into fussy cubes but rather into cartoon spaces of different shapes, some barely touching others, that are well-arranged throughout the installation. Portals , by Phillip K. Smith III. Inspired by the phenomenal light of the desert, the artist had the idea of designing a circular pavilion, 25 m in diameter, with mirrored stainless steel walls that reflected a fragmented view of the sky and the crowd passing through the festival. The project combined two experiments previously carried out by the artist, "Lightworks" and "Light + Shadow". The result is a true work of optical art. Do LaB . Created by the event's producers, the Do LaB Stage complemented the festival's vibe with an interactive, colorful and lighting-enhanced space.
